Ajax are back to within two points of PSV at the top of the table after the 10-man Amsterdammers defeated the leaders 3-1 in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

Going into the game five points behind the leaders, Ajax knew a victory was a must. Erik ten Hag had a fit again Hakim Ziyech in his side, while Dusan Tadic started up front. Mark van Bommel elected to start Michal Sadilek in his midfield over Gaston Pereiro or Mohammed Ihattaren.

The hosts made a bright start but couldn’t take their early chances. PSV looked dangerous on the counter through Hirving Lozano, while Sadilek caused issues for Matthijs de Ligt early on.

In the 22nd minute, Ajax took the lead in fortunate circumstances. Ziyech’s cross was heading into the arms of Jeroen Zoet but Daniel Schwaab stuck out his leg to poke the ball into his own net.

The rest of the first half was a tight affair and the next big chance fell to Lozano early in the second half but after racing in on goal he was denied by Onana.

Ajax were comfortable but just before the hour mark the game turned in PSV’s favour. In the 57th minute, Noussair Mazraoui was late with a high tackle on Angelino. Bjorn Kuipers originally showed a yellow card but that turned into a straight red after consulting VAR. From the resulting free-kick the ball was whipped into the box where Luuk de Jong headed PSV level.

PSV looked the more likely to take the lead but in the 70th minute, Neres was brought down by Schwaab. Nothing was given at first, but Kuipers consulted VAR and awarded the spot-kick. Dusan Tadic scored to restore Ajax’s lead.

PSV went looking for an equaliser before the end but Onana was never really troubled and in the final seconds, Neres sealed the victory with a lovely turn in the box before slotting past Zoet.

Ajax are back to within two points of PSV with seven games still to go. The title race in the Eredivisie is set to go to the wire.
