The provisional Netherlands squad was announced on Friday with several internationals not a part of the 39-man selection. Michael Bell takes a look at those who will not be heading for Qatar.

Tim Krul

The penalty hero for Van Gaal in 2014, Krul will not be there in Qatar, but this does not come as a surprise. Krul refused to take part in the penalty challenge during the most recent international break and Van Gaal confirmed afterward that it meant Krul would not be selected.

Rick Karsdorp

The right-back has been in provisional squads while Van Gaal has been in charge but has not made the final cut. He will not be going to the World Cup despite being a regular for AS Roma.

Hans Hateboer

The 28-year-old has 13 caps for the Netherlands but he will not be adding to that in Qatar. An impressive full-back for Atalanta, Hateboer has usually struggled in Oranje.

Owen Wijndal

Wijndal thought he was getting his big move in the summer when he swapped AZ for Ajax but injuries have scuppered his season so far, while Alfred Schreuder has preferred Daley Blind. Wijndal needs to be playing regularly to get back into the fold.

Joel Veltman

A regular in the Premier League at Brighton and versatile, having played in the centre or right of defence. However, Veltman has been ignored by Van Gaal since his return and that doesn’t change in this squad.

Jordan Teze

Van Gaal gave him his Netherlands debut and he has three caps but Teze has not impressed the head coach recently and he has been left out.

Lutsharel Geertruida

Impressive for Feyenoord and Netherlands U21s but Geertruida still awaits his first Netherlands call-up. He is versatile but must be patient for his chance which will come eventually.

Jerdy Schouten

The Bologna star was given his debut by Van Gaal against Wales In June and he gave an assist. However, that has been his only performance so far and he has not been included. Injuries this season have not helped his cause.

Joey Veerman

Impressive for PSV this season, but Veerman is yet to get a Netherlands call-up. He was in the previous provisional squad for the matches with Poland and Belgium but was overlooked.

Donny van de Beek

Not a surprise given his fitness issues and lack of playing time at Manchester United but Van de Beek will definitely not be going to the World Cup.

Branco van den Boomen

It would have been a surprise, but Van den Boomen has been a revelation in France over the past two seasons. He helped get Toulouse promoted and has since adapted easily to Ligue 1, registering a goal and four assists so far. However, the 27-year-old midfielder is not included.

Calvin Stengs

Fell out of favour in Oranje after a difficult spell in France with OGC Nice and Stengs has yet to prove himself to Van Gaal with Royal Antwerp.

Justin Kluivert

Now with Valencia, Kluivert scored an impressive first goal for the club recently, but that has not been enough to earn him a recall.
