Fred Friday’s first-half goal was enough to earn Dick Advocaat’s Sparta Rotterdam a 1-0 win over Willem II.

Sparta began the game strongly but Ryan Sanusi and Soufyan Ahannach both missed early chances to give them the lead. However, on 23 minutes, Giliano Wijnaldum’s terrible backpass was seized on by Fred Friday and the striker easily slotted into the net to put the hosts in front.

Early in the second half it should have been 2-0 but Friday missed a good chance before Loris Brogno failed to beat Branderhorst when through on the goalkeeper. After an hour, Sander Fischer was unlucky to see his header come back off the woodwork, while substitute Dabney Dos Santos couldn’t finish another one-on-one.

Willem II couldn’t punish Sparta Rotterdam for their misses though and Advocaat’s side held on to take a much-needed three points.

Sparta Rotterdam remain bottom but close the gap on the rest of the bottom three. Willem II are 14th.
