The veteran coach took over from the sacked Alex Pastoor during the winter break and now has the job of keeping Sparta in the Eredivisie. They currently sit second-bottom.

Advocaat said at his pre-match press conference, ”I have more time in which to save Sparta Rotterdam from relegation. At Sunderland I only had 9 games and that appeared to be an impossible task.

”When I arrived at the club I noticed that the players did not have much fight in them and if you lose so many games it can effect your confidence.

”The important thing that we have tried to do is get the self confidence back of the players and instill a bit more fight in the squad.

”Often if a new manager is appointed players want to prove themselves and now Sparta Rotterdam must benefit from that.

”At the time of speaking I am not entirely satisfied with our squad going in to the second half of the season. To ensure a combative quality in the squad it’s important to bring new faces in to produce competition for places but at the moment we have only managed to bring two players in.

”My mission is accomplished if Sparta Rotterdam stay up this season and that is not decided in the match against Vitesse Arnhem.”
