Mason Mount netted the only goal as Vitesse Arnhem spoiled Dick Advocaat’s first game in charge of Sparta Rotterdam.

Heavy snow saw this tie postponed just before the winter break but it gave Advocaat the chance to make his debut as Sparta boss early. His first line-up included Fred Friday up front but Dabney Dos Santos was unfit. Vitesse began with Luc Castaignos in attack and Tim Matavz on the bench.

Sparta had the better of a goalless first half with Robert Muhren going close to the opener for the hosts on more than one occasion.

Henk Fraser took action at half-time with Matavz replacing Castaignos. The change helped Vitesse take charge and after 64 minutes Mason Mount tapped in a Milot Rashica cross to make it 1-0.

Sparta went looking for an equaliser but Muhren’s free kick was kept out by Remko Pasveer before Loris Brogno hit the crossbar. Before the end, Matavz should have made it 2-0 but his header was well saved by Roy Kortsmit.

Sparta begin the year with another defeat and they drop to the bottom of the table on goal difference. Vitesse are 7th.
