afellThe 29-year-old was a free agent after leaving Barcelona this summer, and PSV were hoping for a reunion with their former captain, who left the club for Spain in 2011 after 15 years in Eindhoven.

However Afellay rejected PSV’s contract offer in favour of a move to the Premier League, with the 50 time Netherlands international signing a two-year-deal with Stoke City on Monday.

Afellay struggled to break into the Barcelona team in four injury hit years at Camp Nou, and failed to impress during loan spells with both Schalke and Olympiakos. He left Barcelona having made 35 appearances for the Catalans.

After Erik Pieters and Marco van Ginkel, Afellay is the third Dutchman in the Stoke City squad.
