PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that Ibrahim Afellay will leave the club after only one year.

The veteran returned to PSV last summer but struggled with his fitness all season and only made four appearances.

Both parties then agreed that it is best to part ways and the 34-year-old will become a free agent this summer.

Afellay is not planning to retire and told the PSV website, “John (De Jong) and Toon (Gerbrands) Have been honest and I really appreciate that. They have clearly shown that the warmth I feel for PSV is mutual. And I’m really happy with that. Over the years I have become and remain a real PSV player. It’s nice to hear that I always stay welcome here. I believe that my career is not over yet, that I can still be of value at a good level. Since the winter break I really feel 100% fit. I will use the next few weeks to determine whether I want to take my chance at another club.”

Afellay was appointed PSV captain at the start of the season, but departs having only appeared three times in the Eredivisie.
