afellay cThe 27 year old who missed a huge chunk of last season due to injuries, has once again had to go under the knife to correct issues with his thigh, and will be out for at least four months.

Afellay is not in the plans of Barcelona, and had wanted to leave the club this summer, but his surgery will see him stuck in Catalonia until the January transfer window.

Since leaving PSV back in 2011, where Afellay was regarded as one of the finest midfield talents in Europe, things have gone from bad to worse for the Dutch international.

After only 34 appearances in two seasons at the Nou Camp, Afellay left last summer to join Schalke on loan, and after good signs at the start of the season, injuries ruined his time in Germany, limiting him to 13 matches.

With 44 caps for the Dutch national side, Afellay will have wanted to play regular first team football in order to come under consideration for next summer’s World Cup. However unless a fully fit Afellay can shine in the second half of the season, it is likely Louis van Gaal will look elsewhere ahead of Brazil 2014.
