PSV Eindhoven dominated the first half at the Amsterdam Arena, with Memphis Depay, and debutant Bryan Ruiz causing Ajax problems on the wings.
Depay came the closest to breaking the deadlock with a flick from an Adam Maher cross which went inches wide, while Jurgen Locadia also fired wide when in space on the edge of the box.
Ajax were sloppy in possession, and were forced to mainly play on the counter attack due to the dominance that PSV seemed to have over them.
That all changed in the second half as Ajax began to come into the game more, with Karim Rekik required to make a last ditch challenge to stop a Lasse Schone effort, and Davy Klaassen firing straight at Jeroen Zoet.
On 64 minutes the deadlock was broken as Schone’s perfect cross found Kolbeinn Sigthorsson in the box, and the striker made no mistake with a well placed header.
The goal took the spark out of PSV and Ajax could have scored more, as Zoet was forced into a great save to deny Klaassen, while Viktor Fischer could only fire wide late on.
PSV are now all but out of the title race as they sit 8th and 14 points behind Ajax, who climb back above Vitesse to the summit.
