The home side got off to the perfect start as Siem de Jong fired Ricardo Kishna’s cross into the net before the two minute mark to make it 1-0.
Kishna nearly added a second a few minutes later when he steamed through on goal but Leonard Nienhuis kept out the wingers low effort.
The longer the first half went on Cambuur began to sense that Ajax were not at their best, and pushed for an equaliser. The goal nearly came from a corner, but Mohamed El Makrini headed wide from six yards.
Ten minutes into the second half the scores were level as Martijn Barto headed past Jasper Cillessen from a corner, and the Amsterdam Arena was shocked.
The last half hour saw Ajax putting pressure on the Cambuur backline, and they were awarded a number of dangerous free kicks, but Kolbeinn Sigthorsson smacked one wide, before Nienhuis denied Daley Blind’s curling effort.
In the return fixture, Davy Klaassen netted an injury time winner, but there was no late goal on this occasion as Cambuur held on for a precious point.
Ajax are now only six points ahead of Vitesse in second with seven matches left in the season, while Cambuur remain 11th.
