Ajax ensured they remain five points behind Feyenoord with a simple victory over Sparta Rotterdam.

Before kick off, tributes were paid to Ajax legend Piet Keizer who died from lung cancer earlier this week. Edwin van der Sar addressed the crowd before a minute silence was held for the former winger. In the eleventh minute a round of applause also rattled round the Amsterdam Arena.

Ajax were expected to make light work of Sparta Rotterdam, but the visitors frustrated the hosts in the early stages and the best chance of the opening half fell to Zakaria El Azzouzi. The forward raced through on goal, but couldn’t quite get the ball under control and Andre Onana came out to block El Azzouzi’s effort.

Bertrand Traore made his comeback into the Ajax starting eleven and it was the winger who finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time. Traore received the ball in the box, twisted past a challenge and wrong-footed goalkeeper Ryan Korsmit with a low drive into the corner.

Four minutes into the second half Ajax doubled their lead with Hakim Ziyech tricking his way to the byline before finding Kasper Dolberg for a tap-in. The rest of the game saw Ajax completely dominate possession but they couldn’t add any other goals with Traore hitting the post, and Amin Younes missing two great chances, while Frenkie de Jong had a lovely strike pushed wide.

The win keeps Ajax five points behind Feyenoord while Sparta Rotterdam’s slip down the table continues and they sit 16th.
