Ajax recovered from an Andre Onana error to comfortably beat AZ Alkmaar and maintain their pursuit of Feyenoord.

Brimming with confidence from their win over Feyenoord on Sunday, Ajax pinned AZ into their own half in the first period and eventually took the lead on 16 minutes. Justin Kluivert fired in the perfect cross for Bertrand Traore to net from close range.

Kluivert nearly doubled the lead before the break but after a fine solo run he saw his shot kept out by Tim Krul. At half-time Ajax captain Davy Klaassen was forced off through injury and ten minutes into the second half, AZ drew level.

Andre Onana came rushing out to meet a long ball but didn’t get their ahead of Wout Weghorst who nodded into an empty net. Moments later Onana had to be at full stretch to deny Alireza Jahanbakhsh as AZ woke from their slumber.

However, Davinson Sanchez eased fears in the Amsterdam Arena by restoring Ajax’s lead 0n 71 minutes with a stunning overhead kick. Ten minutes later, Traore was fouled in the box and Lasse Schone scored from the spot to make it 3-1. Amin Younes then sealed the victory late on with a solo run and finish.

Ajax remain three points behind Feyenoord while AZ sit sixth.
