Heerenveen put pressure on Ajax from the start, and Frank de Boer’s side struggle to find any momentum, with striker Arkadiusz Milik isolated. Heerenveen attacked on the counter, and they shocked the Amsterdam Arena on 18 minutes when Luciano Slagveer brilliantly bicycle kicked the ball into the top corner from just outside the box.
With a lead the away side sat back, and they mostly dealt with all Ajax had to throw at them, Davy Klaassen fired wide from a promising position, while Joel Veltman saw a header cleared off the line. On the stroke of half time Heerenveen’s good work was all undone as Slagveer was shown his second yellow card, and they were forced to play the entire second half with ten men.
Ajax made the extra man count in the second half, firstly drawing level on 66 minutes when Daley Sinkgraven unfortunately sent the ball into his own net. and then six minutes later Anwar El Ghazi lashed into the top corner from Ricardo Kishna’s cross to give the home side the lead.
Kishna was making an impressive cameo from the bench and a minute after setting up El Ghazi the winger made it 3-1 with a calm finish after robbing Stefan Marzo near the penalty area. Milik finished the scoring late on from the penalty spot.
Ajax move to one point behind PSV, and go into their match against PSG in midweek with confidence, while Heerenveen sit 9th.
