Ajax remain a point behind PSV after a terrific 5-0 win over Willem II in the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday.

klaawillAjax were disappointing last week in a 1-1 draw with ADO Den Haag, and they once again started poorly against Willem II, with the visitors coming within inches of taking the lead when Ben Sahar struck the post.

However Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, who was returned to the starting line-up ahead of Arkadiusz Milik,  opened the scoring on 14 minutes with a left footed finish into the bottom corner. However the Icelandic forward was then stretchered off with what is presumed to be a serious ankle injury, with Milik his replacement.

Thirteen minutes after coming on Milik doubled the lead, racing onto Lucas Andersen’s pass before slotting into the corner, and three minutes later Joel Veltman strolled forward and added a third goal with an excellent clipped finish over Lamprou. Two minutes before the break Andersen once again set up Milik for his second, and Ajax were heading for a comfortable win.

Milik turned provider before the hour mark as his ball across goal was slid in by Davy Klaassen to make it 5-0 for the dominant hosts. The home side would add no further goals but there was a chance to field new blood with youngsters Queensy Menig and Riechedly Bazoer coming on for their Eredivisie debuts.

Ajax now head into their crucial Champions League tie against APOEL on Wednesday full of confidence, while Willem II remain 8th.
