Siem de Jong had the first chance for Ajax, who lost Bojan early on through a hamstring injury, but the midfielder’s shot from an angle just went wide of the post.
Go Ahead Eagles nearly took the lead on 13 minutes, when a corner was missed by Jasper Cillessen, and Marnix Kolder’s goalbound header was cleared off the line by Christian Poulsen.
The home side created numerous chances, but were stopped by keeper Eloy Room, who also thwarted Viktor Fischer when he ran through one on one.
Ajax finally took the lead on 48 minutes, when Kolbeinn Sigthorsson’s cross was turned into his own net by defender Van der Linden.
Amazingly following the opening goal, Ajax went on to score three more in the space of only five minutes, with Lesley De Sa getting ahead of the Go Ahead defence to make it 2-0.
Kolbeinn Sigthorsson then netted two goals in a space of a minute, firstly diverting De Sa’s cross into the net at the front post, before latching on to Fischer’s pass, and finishing from a tight angle.
The fifth goal came on 64 minutes, and it was Lerin Duarte who sped onto a poor back pass to finish easily, and net his first goal for the club.
Captain De Jong then got involved in the scoring, as he made it 6-0 finishing with a header when Viktor Fischer saw his shot blocked by Room.
A much needed return to scoring form for Ajax ahead of their Champions League tie with AC Milan this week, and they climb back into the top three.
