Ajax director Marc Overmars is not happy that the KNVB have decided not to end the Eredivisie season early.

Football in the Netherlands is currently banned until June 1st due to the coronavirus. However, UEFA announced on Tuesday that the current season can now be finished at a later date and into August.

The KNVB then announced that they hope to restart the domestic campaign in June and have it done by August 3rd.

This has annoyed Marc Overmars, who told De Telegraaf that he wants the season ended, “Why is it currently about money and not about public health?

“I had hoped that the KNVB would make an independent decision, but instead they are hiding behind UEFA.”

Overmars is not happy with money being the main drive of the KNVB, “I’m just having a hard time how it goes. We are not as dependent on TV money in the Netherlands as the competitions in Spain, England, Italy and Germany. I think the big countries have put pressure on UEFA to continue playing football at all costs. And UEFA also benefits from that, because playing or not playing the Champions League means a difference of hundreds of millions of euros.

“I am currently comparing UEFA and the KNVB with US President Donald Trump a week ago: the economy is more important than the corona virus. Hello! More than a hundred people die every day in the Netherlands from the consequences of the coronavirus. ”
