The defender broke into the Fortuna first team as a 16-year-old and was named as their captain at the beginning of this season. He has become an instrumental part of the Limburg club, who currently sit second in the Eerste Divisie.
Schuurs performances had alerted several clubs with the now 18-year-old heavily linked with Premier League side Liverpool, where he had a trial earlier this year, while PSV Eindhoven were also closely monitoring his situation. However, it is Ajax who have won the battle, with Schuurs signing a four-and-a-half year deal in Amsterdam.
Schuurs told the Fortuna website, “It is a dream to be able to play at a top club like Ajax. There were several clubs interested and I also spoke with other clubs, but my feeling at Ajax was immediately very good. I think that’s important. ”
The Netherlands U19 international will officially be an Ajax player from January 1st but will end the season with Fortuna as they aim to win promotion to the Eredivisie.
