Due to the coronavirus, Ajax have cancelled a special meeting with AC Milan to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their European Cup final clash.

On the 24th of May 1995, Ajax defeated AC Milan 1-0 in the European Cup final thanks to Patrick Kluivert’s goal.

For the 25th anniversary of the match, Ajax were planning another meeting with AC Milan. However, speaking on the Ajax website, Edwin van der Sar has confirmed that it has been cancelled. It is unclear whether it would have been a meeting between the two club’s current players or ones that featured in the final on that day.

Van der Sar said, “For example, a number of puzzle pieces fall into the water, but for the bigger picture it is of course important that we recover, that the competitions start again, that players can train again and that the fans can come back to the stadium quickly. We are all working hard on this.”

On how, Van der Sar is handling the crisis in his role as director, “There is no manual for this. It’s just go with the flow. Things discussed in Zeist on Thursday are already outdated. We simply follow the guidelines of the RIVM and the government and in this way we hope, like everyone in this world, to get the best out of it. But it is clear that we are in pain together – supporters, sponsors, the club, the players.”
