Ajax eased to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Willem II in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

After a starring role in the victory over Go Ahead Eagles in the KNVB Cup, Erik ten Hag granted David Neres his place in the starting line-up at the expense of Donny van de Beek.

In the first minute, the Brazilian nearly opened the scoring but Neres was denied by a goalline clearance by Fernando Lewis. In the eleventh minute, Neres played a key role in the opening goal as his cross found Kasper Dolberg, who hammered a strike past Timon Wellenreuther.

The Willem II goalkeeper denied Frenkie de Jong but in the 22nd minute, the midfielder made it 2-0 with a precise strike from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.

Ajax completely dominated after the break but failed to add a third with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Neres going close. Apart from one Donis Avdijaj strike into the side netting, Willem II didn’t provide much fight as Ajax eased to three points.

Ten Hag’s side remains five points behind PSV and will now start preparing for the away trip to Benfica in midweek. Willem II are 14th.
