In the summer of 2007, Ajax sold Ryan Babel to Liverpool and were looking for a new left winger. Through scout Patrick Busby, Angel Di Maria came into the picture.
The winger had just won the U20 World Cup with Argentina, and still played for Rosario Central.
Busby told Voetbal International, “Through me, Ángel Di María came on the radar.
“Scouts Mühren and Arroyo gave a positive advice to the technical director (Martin van Geel). The trainer (Henk ten Cate) Did not know him and preferred a player he knew.”
Ajax chose Albert Luque instead, with the Spaniard not impressing. Di Maria went on to Benfica instead. Busby added, “Everyone knows what happened to Di María. Ajax could have had him for six million.”
