PSV leapfrogged Ajax into top spot on Saturday piling the pressure on Frank de Boer’s side, who were held by Heracles midweek.
De Boer decided to make changes with Anwar El Ghazi starting up front, while Arkaduisz Milik took the number ten role. This change seemed to be working in the first half-hour as the two attackers grabbed a goal each to put Ajax in a commanding lead. Firstly on 27 minutes Milik headed in Nemanja Gudelj’s corner before El Ghazi doubled the lead with a precise finish from just outside the box.
Just before the break Roda JC gave themselves a lifeline as Rydell Poepon finished Kristoffer Petersen’s cross. Early in the second half Daley Sinkgraven was forced to clear off the line asĀ Ugur Inceman came close to an equaliser.
After the hour mark Davy Klaassen made his comeback from injury, but the Ajax captain couldn’t inspire his side to victory as Roda JC maintained control. Seven minutes before the end Poepon volleyed just wide as it seemed Ajax were set to hold on, but in the 92nd minute Maecky Ngombo forced in a equaliser.
Ajax now remain 2nd, while Roda JC sit 13th.
