Ajax began their Eredivisie title defence with a simple 5-0 victory over newly-promoted NEC Nijmegen.

NEC were captained by former Ajax star Lasse Schone and the home crowd showed their support by chanting the Dane’s name at the start. Schone’s side had a tough time in Amsterdam though, with Ajax already racing into a 4-0 lead by the 20th minute.

Sebastien Haller made it 1-0 in the 6th minute after latching onto a pass from Noussair Mazraoui, who netted the second shortly afterwards with a header. Bart van Rooij chested the ball into his own net on 14 minutes before Dusan Tadic added the fourth.

Ajax showed no mercy and in the 40th minute, Tadic added a fifth after a cross from Steven Berghuis. NEC were annoyed by what they saw as a foul by Mazraoui in the build-up but the goal stood.

Ajax remained comfortable in the second half but no further goals were scored as NEC kept them at bay.

The hosts immediately climb to the top of the table, while NEC must pick themselves up for their clash with PEC Zwolle on Friday.
