Ajax have kept their slim title chances alive after a slim 1-0 victory over Heracles Almelo.

After PSV’s stunning comeback against AZ on Saturday Ajax went into the game ten points behind the league leaders and knew only a win would keep their chances of the title alive ahead of their meeting in Eindhoven next weekend.

From the start, Ajax poured forward and it nearly resulted in a quick goal but Donny van de Beek could only hit the post, while Bram Castro denied David Neres and Lasse Schone. Ajax had 21 attempts on the Heracles goal in the first half but it did not result in a goal. Rasmus Kristensen also hit the woodwork in a frustrating 45 minutes for the hosts.

Eventually, in the 63rd minute the opener came as Neres volleyed Hakim Ziyech’s clipped cross past Castro. The Brazilian looked slightly offside but the goal stood.

Justin Kluivert should have sealed the win shortly after the opener but he fired over the bar. Ajax continued to create chances but thanks to Castro they only netted once. Before the end, Kasper Dolberg made his comeback from injury.

The win moves Ajax to within seven points of PSV with four games left. A PSV win over Ajax next weekend would be enough to seal the Eindhoven side the title. Heracles are 11th.
