PAOK finished fourth in the Greek league last season, but qualified for the Champions League through a play-off. The club have one Dutchman in their ranks, having signed winger Diego Biseswar from Kayserispor this summer.

Ajax were knocked out at this stage in the Champions league last season after defeat to Rapid Vienna, but they saw off PAOK at this stage in the competition back in 2010/11 season. They drew 3-3 in Greece and 1-1 in Amsterdam, which saw Ajax through on away goals.
