elia aFrank de Boer’s side wanted to add an extra winger to their squad, after completing the signing of midfielder Lerin Duarte, with Benfica’s Ola John, and Elia the targets.

John was the first choice, but after Benfica suffered injuries in their match with Sporting Lisbon on Saturday, the club were not willing to let the 20 year old leave on loan.

On Monday, Ajax then started negotiations with Elia, who was said to be keen on the switch to Amsterdam, as he looks to get his career back on track, after a torrid time with injuries in Germany.

However the move broke down, as Ajax could not agree a deal with Werder Bremen, with the Germans wanting the move to be permanent, while Ajax only wanted a loan, with an option to buy.

This will come as a frustration to Ajax fans, who have seen key players Christian Eriksen, Derk Boerrigter, Jody Lukoki, Ryan Babel, and Toby Alderweireld all leave the club, while only Duarte, and Mike van der Hoorn have come in.

Ajax have money in their pockets, but will seemingly turn to their youth again, as they search for a fourth straight Eredivisie title.
