Ajax were in pot 2 for the draw and were placed into Group D alongside Premier League champions Liverpool, who have Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum in their squad.
Next into the group was Italian side Atalanta Bergamo, who finished third in Serie A last season. Ajax will come up against Hans Hateboer, Marten de Roon and Sam Lammers against the Italians.
Finally, Danish champions Midtjylland completed Group D after they booked their place in the competition by beating Slavia Prague on Wednesday.
