Back in 1999 Cape Town-based clubs Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs merged to form an affiliate for the Dutch record champions.
At the time the Amsterdam club was looking to expand its scouting network on the African continent, leading to involvement with Ashanti Gold in Ghana and the foundation of Ajax Cape Town.
The Ghanaian project was already abandoned in 2003, as Ajax sold their entire 51% majority stake.
As the main reason for the sale of their shares in Ajax Cape Town, the Dutch club stated that Ajax’s current ambition of striving to be among the European elite and the situation their South African partners find themselves in, further co-operation is not in the club’s best interests.
An Amsterdam delegation is currently in talks with minority shareholder Cape Town Stars to sell their entire amount of shares to.
It is expected that a deal will be reached within a couple of days.
