David Neres earned Ajax a 1-1 draw with Juventus in the first-leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.

Ajax stunned Real Madrid in the last round and looked to put the pressure on Juventus from the start on Wednesday night.

Pressing high up the pitch and controlling possession through Frenkie de Jong, Ajax dominated the opening stages against Ajax. Chances fell to Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek but on both occasions, they were off target.

Apart from one Federico Bernardeschi strike that went wide, Juventus barely threatened but with the last kick of the first half the Italians took the lead. From a throw-in from their own half, Juventus broke and a clipped ball into the box was met by Cristiano Ronaldo, who put a diving header past Andre Onana.

Straight from kick-off in the second half, Ajax made it 1-1. David Neres stole the ball off Joao Cancelo before cutting inside and curling a great strike into the far corner. Nicolas Tagliafico nearly made it 2-1 shortly afterwards but his strike flew into the side netting.

Ajax were full of confidence after the equaliser and they pushed forward looking for the lead. Substitute Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, making his Champions League debut, almost made it 2-1 but his shot on the turn was turned away by Wojciech Szczesny.

With five minutes to go Juventus came within inches of the lead when Douglas Costa burst into the box but his strike came back off the post.

The game ended 1-1 and there is now all to play for when the teams meet again in two weeks time.
