Excelsior Rotterdam manager Alfons Groenendijk spoke to NOS and lamented his team’s overall lack of discipline in giving away victory at home to FC Twente.

GROENExcelsior took the lead through Tom van Weert in the first half but a major error at the back allowed Hakim Ziyech to equalise for Twente before the end.

Groenendijk told NOS, ”I think that we have given away the victory tonight without us playing particularly well and you get those types of games in a season”.

”We could have gone 2-0 up earlier in the game and FC Twente also created very little and then we gave the goal away to make it 1-1. That was very disappointing for us because we must win these types of games”.

”The most disappointing thing for me which I have already stated during training this week is that we are not alert and sharp enough at times and when we are alert and sharp we can play well. I also concerned at times because we are playing in our second season in the Eredivisie that we think that the extra effort is not needed for example today launching attacks and committing 8 men forward”.

” We lacked discipline today which is not like us. I will speak with my players in training this week about this as I have brought it up before and we must be really sharp in every game in order to get something out of it”.

”If we are going to neglect our basic tasks then these types of games will happen more than not”.

Excelsior Rotterdam are currently 12th in the Eredivisie with 17 points from 15 games.
