Excelsior have revealed plans to expand their stadium and get rid of their artificial pitch.

The Rotterdam club’s Van Donge & De Roo Stadion only holds 4500 fans at the moment but director Ferry de Haan has told RTV Rijnmond that there are plans for a major expansion.

He said, “We are well on the way and in addition, we are talking to a number of partners and the municipality. We are not a club that is going to attract 20,000 spectators, so we want to go to 7,500 places, which requires a thorough adjustment so that Excelsior really becomes a ‘place to be’.

“If you have a certain ambition you should not start building too small. A 7500 capacity is a good number here: in terms of number of spectators, season ticket holders and individual ticket sales, we have definitely grown in recent years, which makes this a real ambition.”

Excelsior currently have an artificial pitch but with their new plans, a real grass pitch would be laid. De Haan said, “In our plan, we think of real grass, and if we can realize these plans, that means that our revenues will rise, so that we can finance a real lawn
