Following their relegation, a number of Newcastle’s key players, including Daryl Janmaat and Georginio Wijnaldum, are expected to depart this summer. However, coach Rafa Benitez has been handed a boost with versatile defender Vurnon Anita stating that he will stay to help the club earn promotion.
Anita was asked by The Chronicle whether he would remain at Newcastle next season, he replied, “Yeah, I have one year of my contract left and I will stay.
“We had a very, very good run but unfortunately we didn’t make it. Now the focus is already on next year and trying to fight and come back straight away to the Premier League.
“We must come back from this and we need to. That is now the focus and the only thing.”
Anita joined Newcastle from Ajax back in 2012 and has made 106 appearances for the club, scoring twice.
