After losing to PSV and only drawing at home to Vitesse, Ajax were desperately looking for a win, but Emmen got off to the perfect start. After six minutes, captain Jeroen Veldmate fired a free-kick into the top corner.
Ajax fought back quickly as Kenneth Taylor equalised two minutes after the opener with a strike that was spilled over the line by Emmen goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart. Taylor then headed Ajax in front after 21 minutes and Steven Bergwijn made it 3-1 at the break with an excellent strike.
Emmen had chances to score more goals before the break and Alfred Schreuder made a double change before the second half. The injured Calvin Bassey and Brian Brobbey went off for Daley Blind and Mohammed Kudus.
Emmen looked dangerous and in the 58th minute, Richairo Zivkovic pulled one back after Blind and Jurrien Timber failed to deal with a cross.
Kudus hit the crossbar as Ajax looked to kill the game, while at the other end, Mark Diemers put a good chance wide. In the 88th minute, Mohamed Bouchouari fired a cross into the box and it was missed by his teammates and the Ajax defence as the ball flew into the net to make it 3-3.
There was no winner for either side and Ajax goes into the World Cup break having not won in three games on the bounce. Emmen is in 16th.
