Vitesse Arnhem tasted defeat for the first straight Eredivisie tie as Groningen left Arnhem with a 2-1 victory.

After defeats to Emmen and ADO Den Haag, Vitesse went into Friday’s clash looking to return to winning ways.

However, Groningen are confident at the moment and after 13 minutes they had the lead in curious circumstances. Kaj Sierhuis had a shot saved by Remko Pasveer before Joel Asoro netted on the rebound. However, Pasveer seemed to be distracted by a second ball being thrown on the field. Despite this interruption, the goal was given.

Bryan Linssen then came close to an equaliser but Sergio Padt tipped his fierce strike onto the crossbar. A minute after this chance, Groningen doubled their lead through Asoro again, who finished well after Sierhuis won a header in the box.

Sierhuis nearly made it 3-0 before the break but his free-kick crashed back off the crossbar.

Leonid Slutsky decided to bring on Tim Matavz at half-time and five minutes into the second half, they pulled one back when Pasveer’s long ball forward was met by Linssen, who fired past Padt.

The home crowd expected an onslaught from Vitesse in search of an equaliser but it never really came. Padt saved from Matavz and Eli Dasa, but Groningen comfortably held on despite seven minutes of added time.

The victory moves Groningen up to 6th and one spot behind Vitesse.
