The home side went into the game looking to make up for their horrible performance in midweek as they were crushed 7-1 by Lyon in the Europa League.
John van den Brom made changes for the match with Ron Vlaar, Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Fred Friday among those dropping out of the starting line-up. The hosts did dominate the first half but couldn’t find a goal with Wout Weghorst denied by Mickey van der Hart, who also saved a Derrick Luckassen free kick.
The home crowd weren’t satisfied by what they saw and their mood got worse early in the second half when a PEC Zwolle corner resulted in Ryan Thomas hammering the ball into the net to make it 1-0.
PEC Zwolle then had their chances to make it 2-0 but didn’t take them and in the final ten minutes Levi Garcia set up Fred Friday for a tap-in which rescued a point for AZ.
AZ remain 5th in the table and must pick themselves up for the KNVB Cup semi-final against Cambuur in midweek. PEC Zwolle are 13th.
