Sparta arrived in Alkmaar without a win in their last five league games and pressure is starting to build on coach Alex Pastoor, who began the match without a recognised centre forward.
The tactic worked in the first half with the visitors by far the most dangerous side, but Thomas Verhaar and Stijn Spierings both saw efforts saved while Ivan Calero fired an excellent chance wide.
AZ barely threatened in the first period but nine minutes into the second half they took the lead with Derrick Luckassen heading in Maumer Tankovic’s free kick.
However, AZ couldn’t kill the game off and Sparta remained dangerous with Verhaar hitting the post with just over ten minutes left. It seemed AZ were set to hold on for the victory but four minutes from time substitute Mathias Pogba headed in his first goal for Sparta to earn his side a point (watch below).
AZ remain fifth in the league while Sparta are 13th.
