AZ Alkmaar warmed up for their KNVB Cup final clash with Vitesse next week with a 2-1 win over 10-man Twente.

Despite the final next week, John van den Brom sent his strongest eleven out to face Twente in a game that had no real consequences for either side.

AZ dominated possession in the first half but chances were limited to long range efforts from Ridgeciano Haps and Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Twente failed to bring Enes Unal into the action but both Fredrik Jensen and Yaw Yeboah went close for the visitors as the first half ended goalless.

Wout Weghorst came within inches of giving AZ the lead early in the second half before the visitors opened the scoring on 65 minutes. Joachim Andersen headed in Mateusz Klich’s corner. Moments later, Jahanbakhsh should have equalised but could only fire over the bar from a few yards out.

Eventually, with nine minutes left, AZ equalised with Peet Bijen heading into his own net. Andersen was then shown his second yellow card and playing against 10-men, AZ found the winner in injury time. Fred Friday raced through the Twente defence before slotting past Nick Marsman.

The win puts AZ into fifth place while Twente stay 7th.
