The hosts, who went into the game on the back of the 1-0 win over Dundalk in the Europa League, got off to a lightning start with Robert Muhren converting Ben Rienstra’s cross after only five minutes to open the scoring.
Heracles nearly equalised in the 12th minute but Samuel Armenteros fired over the bar after being set up by Brahim Darri and shortly after AZ made it 2-0 as Wout Weghorst headed in Illias Bel Hassani’s corner.
On 25 minutes the home side extended their lead again with Muhren netting his second after some great work by left-back Ridgeciano Haps. Weghorst could have made it 4-0 before the break but he skied a penalty over the bar.
Early in the second half Muhren missed two great chances to complete his hat-trick and Heracles then gave themselves hope as Armenteros pulled one back from the penalty spot. However, any chance of a comeback was ended on 73 minutes when Dabney Dos Santos made it 4-1, and just before the end, Alireza Jahanbakhsh sealed the rout with a great strike.
The victory moves AZ up to fourth, while Heracles are 11th.
