Without ill coach Marco van Basten AZ Alkmaar fell to a 1-0 defeat to Heerenveen at the AFAS Stadion.

sinkgravThe last few days has been filled with stories that Marco van Basten will be forced to quit his position at AZ due to illness and for the visit of his former club Heerenveen assistant coach Alex Pastoor was once again in charge.

Seven minutes before the break Heerenveen found the only goal of the game as Daley Sinkgraven found the bottom corner with a sliding effort after great work by forward Mark Uth.

AZ tried to get back into the match in the second half with Robert Muhren coming close twice to his first AZ goal while Guus Hupperts fired just wide of Kristoffer Nordfeldt’s post. Heerenveen’s defence held strong for the win while in the 88th minute their was a touching round of applause for Van Basten, who’s presence was clearly missed at the AFAS Stadion.

Its now three wins in a row for Heerenveen who climb to 2nd in the table, while AZ slip to ninth.
