Both sides started the match with attacking content, but it was AZ Alkmaar who broke the deadlock on 14 minutes when Aron Johannsson powerfully headed Thom Haye’s cross past Eloy Room. Youngster Dabney dos Santos could have doubled the lead soon after, but he could only send a header just wide.
The second half was all about Vitesse trying to find an equaliser, but they could not find a way past an inspired Esteban Alvarado. The goalkeeper excellently kept out shots from Abiola Dauda and Bertrand Traore as Zakaria Labyad began to pull the strings in the middle of the pitch.
AZ battled at the back and held on for the three points, which moves them up to 5th in the table, while Vitesse, who have failed to win in their last three matches, now sit 12th
