johansson aIn a frustrating first half hour, neither team could create any chances, with the two teams defences on top, and the final ball lacking in the final third.

Then on 42 minutes, the deadlock was brilliantly broken by AZ Alkmaar right back Mattias Johansson, who cut in from the left hand side, before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the corner.

Vitesse had an opportunity to equalise straight away, but Alvarado pulled off a great save to deny Valeri Kazaishvili’s shot that look destined for the top corner.

Three minutes into the second half, Mike Havenaar headed Renato Ibarra’s cross over the bar, and the striker then saw his shot from the edge of the box deflected wide.

AZ sat back, and soaked up the pressure from Vitesse, and looked to counter attack, but could not find the second goal to kill the game.

It seemed like AZ were going to hang onto the three points, but just before the end, Vitesse equalised, when a cross from Frank van der Struijk was headed in from a few yards by Jonathan Reis.

A late blow for AZ Alkmaar, who enjoyed most of the possession but had to settle for a point, as they, and Vitesse failed to close in on PEC Zwolle at the top.
