AZ got off to the perfect start as Roy Beerens looped an excellent volley over Nick Marsman to give them an early lead.
Beerens could have extended the home side’s lead soon after, but the winger saw an effort tipped around the post, before firing just wide.
Twente equalised in the 40th minute, with Youness Mokhtar firing in from close range, after AZ keeper Alvarado had fumbled a shot.
On 75 minutes, Twente should have taken the lead, with Mokhtar and Kyle Ebecilio both hitting the underside of the crossbar before Dusan Tadic fired inches wide.
In the 2nd minute of stoppage time Twente sealed all three points, as Mokhtar netted his second with a back post header from Roberto Rosales’s cross.
The loss is AZ’s second in a row, and coach Dick Advocaat’s good start at the club has hit a bad patch, while Twente remain in third place.
