heerenThe two teams met midweek in the KNVB Cup, with AZ Alkmaar scraping through on penalties after a 2-2 draw. However straight from the kick off it was obvious Heerenveen wanted revenge.

After only 12 minutes Balil Basacikoglu took advantage of slack defending before rifling a shot into the corner to give Heerenveen an early lead.

On 21 minutes it was 2-0, with midfielder Hakim Ziyech firing a stunning drive past Alvarado, and in off the crossbar.AZ pulled a goal back five minutes before half time through striker Aron Johannsson, who found the top corner from inside the box.

However in first half injury time, AZ Alkmaar were at sixes and sevens at the back, and an error was capitalised on by Alfred Finnbogason, who’s cross along the box was tapped in by Luciano Slagveer.

Finnbogason added the 4th goal on 69 minutes with a nice finish, before Ziyech netted his 2nd of the game with a low drive into the bottom corner to seal an emphatic win for the visitors.

Its now four league losses in a row for Dick Advocaat’s side who slip down the table to 7th, while Heerenveen go into the winter break sitting 5th.
