AZ Alkmaar came back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Groningen at the AFAS Stadion.

gronde leeuwGroningen went into the game without a win in their last two matches, but Edwin van de Looi’s side seemed to be heading for a comfortable victory after taking a 2-0 lead.

After only 10 minutes Michael de Leeuw partnering Danny Hoesen up front, headed in Tjarron Chery’s corner. Hoesen himself then doubled the lead six minutes into the second half, scoring from close range after being set up by Jarchinio Antonia.

AZ barely threatened their opponents but they were handed the chance to get back into the match from the penalty spot on the hour mark. Nemaja Gudelj’s spot kick came back off the crossbar, but Mikhail Rosheuvel reacted quickly to slot in the rebound and set up an exciting last half hour.

Chery struck the post for Groningen before Gudelj drew AZ level with an excellent free kick on 87 minutes.

The point means both teams now have 14 points with AZ sitting 10th and Groningen 11th.
