With the interested clubs circling, Sebastien Haller may have been playing his final game for Utrecht on Saturday evening, and the Frenchman missed a glorious chance to open the scoring early on, shooting straight at Coutinho from close range.
AZ, who handed a start to Ron Vlaar who is finally fit again, then took the lead on 27 minutes when Mattias Johansson curled a great strike into the corner. It was nearly 2-0 soon after but Vincent Janssen’s header was acrobatically stopped by Robbin Ruiter.
In the second half Robert Muhren thought he had netted AZ Alkmaar’s second, but his goal was chalked off for offside. The home crowd were incensed and a few minutes later their mood didn’t improve as Utrecht equalised. Substitute Ruud Boymans beautifully headed Sean Kleiber’s cross past Coutinho for his first since returning from long term injury.
Three minutes later it seemed Utrecht were to snatch victory with Haller cleverly turning the ball past Coutinho, but in injury time Joris van Overeem was taken out in the box and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw earned the home side a point from the spot.
Utrecht head into the winter break sitting 7th, while AZ are 11th
