Cambuur got off to a terrific start, when Marciel Hemmen got free from Jan Wuytens in the box to head in a free-kick after seven minutes.
AZ went looking for the equaliser, with Aron Johannsson firing wide from inside the box, while Hemmen nearly scored an own goal with his attempted clearance hitting the post.
On 35 minutes a long ball over the top set Johannsson free, and the American international squared the ball for Roy Beerens to fire into the net, and level the scores at 1-1.
Then two minutes before half time, a cross from the right was flicked into the path of Johannsson by Maarten Mertens, and the striker calmly finished from a few yards out.
The second half was an end to end affair, with Judy Lokoki almost equalising for Cambuur, but after going through on goal his shot was saved by Alvarado.
At the other end Beerens nearly caught Cambuur keeper Leonard Nienhuis off his line, while Johann Gudmundsson’s free-kick went just wide.
On 65 minutes AZ moved 3-1 up as a quick free kick was played to Johannsson on the left, and he jinked inside his defender before curling a great effort into the top corner.
Roy Beerens fired just wide from outside of the box in the final minutes, as AZ Alkmaar held on for the 3-1 win.
AZ move up to 8th in the table, and are now only three points behind leaders Twente, while Cambuur sit just above the bottom three in 15th place.
