AZ Alkmaar were held to a 0-0 draw by VVV Venlo in the AFAS Stadion on Saturday evening.

VVV went into the game as underdogs after their 3-0 loss against Willem II in midweek, but they frustrated an AZ side, who hammered FC Twente 4-0 last time out.

AZ dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t create chances. The best opportunities fell to the visitors on the counter but Romeo Castelen and Lennart Thy couldn’t find the opener.

In the second half, AZ were far more dangerous. Wout Weghorst sent a shot into the side netting just after the restart, while Mats Seuntjens forced Lars Unnerstall into a good save.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh had a rare off day, but the winger presented Joris van Overeem with an excellent opportunity that the midfielder poked wide. In injury time, Ricardo van Rhijn had a great chance to win it, but couldn’t beat Unnerstall as VVV held on for a point.

AZ remain third but could fall seven points behind Ajax on Sunday. VVV are tenth.
