AZ Alkmaar failed to close on the top four after being held to a 1-1 draw by Groningen.

AZ went into the game on the back of two defeats, but they dominated the early stages with Guus Til, Wout Weghorst and Joris van Overeem were all guilty of missing good chances.

Eventually, AZ found the opening goal on the stroke of halftime with Alireza Jahanbakhsh hammering a half-volley past Sergio Padt from the edge of the area.

Groningen improved after the break, and ten minutes into the second half, Ritsu Doan was brought down in the box and Mimoun Mahi equalised from the penalty spot.

Doan thought he netted the winner for Groningen before the end but his effort was ruled out for a foul earlier in the move by Mahi. The point sees AZ sit 7th while Groningen are 11th.
