Advocaat takes over from Gertjan Verbeek, who was sacked in September for a lack of chemistry with the squad, even though they had just beaten PSV 2-1 the day before.
This will be the second time that Advocaat has managed AZ, having spent five months in charge during the 09-10 season before he left to take over the Russia national team.
The 66 year old has been out of work since leaving PSV Eindhoven last summer, and was linked with taking over at Denmark, and Russian side Anzhi.
Advocaat has won the Eredivisie title once in his career with PSV, and has also managed Rangers, Zenit st Petersburg, and the Dutch national team.
He takes over AZ, with the side going well in the Europa League, and currently lying ninth in the Eredivisie table after a decent start to the season.
His first game in charge will be the league tie at home to Cambuur on Sunday.
