After a disappointing week, AZ Alkmaar re-found their winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Excelsior.

az janssen gkA defeat to Ajax in the league was followed up by a KNVB Cup semi-final loss to Feyenoord in midweek for AZ, and they hosted Excelsior determined to get back to winning ways.

The first half was a messy affair with Vincent Janssen going the closest for the home side but somehow his shot didn’t reach the net after being saved by Tom Muyters and the post.

Eventually after 57 minutes the opener did come as Derrick Luckassen fired in from close range after Janssen headed Dabney dos Santos’s corner into his path.

Excelsior thought they had equalised minutes later but Tom van Weert’s goal was disallowed by the linesman for offside.

AZ then sealed victory with fifteen minutes left as Sander Fischer dragged down Janssen in the box, earning the defender a red card and the striker picked himself up to net from the spot.

The win temporarily moves AZ back to third place, while Excelsior remain 16th.
