AZ Alkmaar ended a positive week with a 2-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen.

az necAZ went into the game on a high after last weeks win over Utrecht was followed up by the club sealing their place in the Europa League group stage. John van den Brom was without Markus Henriksen, who is on his way to Hull City, and his side started sluggishly with Fred Friday and Joris van Overeem passing up early chances.

Finally, on 43 minutes Dabney Dos Santos gave the home side the lead as he headed in van Overeem’s cross. Eight minutes into the second half, AZ’s evening was made easier when Julian von Haacke received his second yellow for a challenge on Fred Friday. The home side then passed up several chances to make it 2-0 but eventually Alireza Jahanbakhsh found the net to seal victory on 73 minutes.

The win lifts AZ to 6th, while NEC drop to 12th.
